🚞 Over 8,000 kilometers: that is the round-trip distance between La Rochelle, France and Ånderdalen National Park, Norway.

🚉 Determined to keep their carbon footprint low, a group of young adventurers (aged 14 to 15) opted for a more sustainable travel by train and bus.

This journey turned out to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for these teenagers who were on their way for another adventure in Ånderdalen National Park with Rissa Citizen Science.

Today, we were out on Kvaløya with two scientists from NINA (Norwegian institute for nature research) and 6 volunteers.

🌱 We mapped campfires in Grøtfjord, between Tromvik and Rekvik, and in Skulsfjord while the two botanists focused on identifying the plant species in the study areas.

🔥 We focused on the “Northern Lights watching spots”, where campfires are abundant. The multiplication of campfires is the consequence of the explosion of the northern lights watching tourism industry. These campfires causes habitat destruction and contributes to the already negative perception of the industry by the locals.

👋 This event is part of a research project “Sporløs Nordlysturisme”, or Traceless Northern Lights tourism. A collaboration between @ninaforskning and @rissa_citizen_science, and with the participation of @leavenotraceorg.

🌲 The goal of the project is to promote traceless behaviors, and encourage operators and their guides to adopt leave-no-trace practices during their tours, with a focus on campfires.

🙏 @boukersenheim contributed today with three of their guides. We are inviting all tour operators in Tromsø to be part of this initiative.

✊ Being sustainable is not enough.
Mass tourism should now be regenerative to create nature-positive (and not neutral) impacts on nature and the destination in general.

Kittiwakes have returned to the «Mack Øst» hotels!

These kittiwake hotels were put up to compensate for the destruction of about 150 nests on the Mack building, which was torn down. The kittiwake hotels were erected inside the construction site, surrounded by 2-meter high fences.

These wooden structures designed by @atarkitektur were soon adopted by kittiwakes despite the very loud noise of the construction site.

But when the fences were removed to allow people to walk along the sea again, the kittiwakes abandoned their new home.

While they didn’t seem to mind about the loud noise of the heavy machines, they did not cope with the constant flow of people walking, running and biking too close. Kittiwakes deserted the hotels.

As an emergency solution, we took the liberty to put up a temporary fences made of barrels and ropes. It was a Sunday, the o25th of May. We were still packing our tools when we saw a group of 25 kittiwakes coming back and standing on the sea-facing side of the structures.

Since then, the number of kittiwakes has increased and their attachment to the hotels is growing every day that passes. Some kittiwakes are have started building a nest, and hopefully the dislodged pairs will settle there, instead of spreading in the city center —or not nesting at all.

The contractor — Hent — committed to replace this improvised fence with a more adequate one. We are looking forward to that.

⚠️ The black-legged kittiwake is «Highly Endangered» on Norway’s Red List. It is facing a high risk of extinction in mainland Norway. Some of the survivors find refuge in some coastal cities and towns, where predation is lower. According to ornithologists at the Norwegian institute for nature research (NINA), climate change may be the main driver of the alarming decline of kittiwakes. If that’s the case, kittiwakes should be considered as climate refugees in Tromsø.

As an emergency solution, we took the liberty to put up a temporary fences made of barrels and ropes. It was a Sunday, the o25th of May. We were still packing our tools when we saw a group of 25 kittiwakes coming back and standing on the sea-facing side of the structures.

Since then, the number of kittiwakes has increased and their attachment to the hotels is growing every day that passes. Some kittiwakes are have started building a nest, and hopefully the dislodged pairs will settle there, instead of spreading in the city center —or not nesting at all.

The contractor — Hent — committed to replace this improvised fence with a more adequate one. We are looking forward to that.

⚠️ The black-legged kittiwake is «Highly Endangered» on Norway’s Red List. It is facing a high risk of extinction in mainland Norway. Some of the survivors find refuge in some coastal cities and towns, where predation is lower. According to ornithologists at the Norwegian institute for nature research (NINA), climate change may be the main driver of the alarming decline of kittiwakes. If that’s the case, kittiwakes should be considered as climate refugees in Tromsø.

@rissa_citizen_science teamed up with the Tromsø Student Diving Club (@sut_dykk ) and the Norwegian Lifesaving Organization (@redningsselskapet_region_nord ) to organize a shore and underwater cleanup between Sørsjetéen and Polaria.

We engage the local youth thanks to these collaborations with schools around Tromsø and Senja. The participants learn about citizen science, nature conservation, animal tracks and about the importance of sharing their naturalist observations on open-access platforms.

Today, pupils from Grønnåsen high school in Tromsø joined a citizen science project led by Dr Caitlin Mandeville @ntnu, in collaboration with @artsdatabanken.

One goal of the project is to develop an app that will identify animal footprints from photos— to help fill a knowledge gap concerning the mapping of wildlife (mammals in particular) in Norway’s protected areas.

The initial step is to teach the machine. Which is why we looked for animal tracks, so that in a near future the app will tell us whose species the footprints we see belong too.

Sørsjetéen is a jetty on the outskirts of Tromso city center.
🐟 Volunteer-based restoration efforts have turned this artificial reef into a marine life heaven.

🤿🤿 Some of the Kelpers are snorkeling for the first time, others are confirmed free divers, while experienced scuba divers join the events as well. Everyone is welcome to join these free events.

When no alternative breeding sites are provided, the displaced kittiwakes colonize neighboring buildings.

This hotel is financed by @tromsfylke as a way to protect the building and avoid spreading conflict in Tromsø sentrum. The black-legged kittiwake is a Highly Endangered species on Norway’s Red List.

Sea urchins had returned massively to the site during the winter, but their density was nothing in comparison to what it was before the restoration effort started in 2023 (over 200 urchins per square meter!).
