Together, we brought kelp along Sørsjetéen, since the first dives in 2023. This site is now rich in life and colors! We are diving today to maintain urchin density low, replacing natural predators. You can contribute from land or in the sea. Snacks & hot drinks will be offered to the volunteers.

Kelp restoration in Øksfjord: a successful first step!

📍Stop by Sørsjetéen, in Tromsø city center and check out this new exhibit, with photos from talented underwater photographers @cleclebrun @facethewild.underwater @anncoolsphotography.

🦦 The Kelpers are dedicated volunteers who participate in kelp forest restoration efforts in Tromsø.

🐟 They started in October 2023 and removed around 56,000 sea urchins along the 200 m of the southern side of the jetty. Kelp and other seaweeds are now thriving, creating a refuge for marine life, right in Tromsø city center.

🤝 This grassroots initiative is supported by the Ocean Green project @oceangreenofficial, which is funded by @innovasjonnorge and @forskningsradet). Ava Ocean is the project leader while @nibio_no leads work package 7, where @rissa_citizen_science is involved (citizen science, community building, outreach).

🫶 @tromsokommune and @tromsohavn have facilitated the exhibit.
🙏 @cewe.no sponsored the printing of 11 photos, and the result is amazing!

A kelp forest is thriving in Tromsø along Sørsjetéen, but only thanks to the volunteers who dive and remove sea urchins regularly.

Since November 2024, over 2000 participants joined more than 100 events (check the counter on Rissa’s website/HOME!)

✊ Together, we kept an eye on the endangered kittiwake, mapped biodiversity where it is threatened, dived to restore kelp forests, fixed soil erosion in Ånderdalen National Park, hiked with snowshoes for a research project on light pollution, mapped cairns and hiking trails, surveyed campfires in areas affected by overtourism, put up nest boxes for owls and songbirds and ate lots of waffles too!

It is a tedious process that starts with selecting the most colorful shells, and those having a similar tone.

Sara uses the green sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) which can be pink, or purple (yes!). This is a native species in Norway, and it became overwhelmingly dominant after the 1970s. It plays a very important role in a healthy ocean, but can overgraze its own habitat when its population is not controlled by predators.

🎨 Art is a powerful tool to raise awareness, and @rissa_citizen_science was very happy to collaborate with @esn.tromso for this project. We are very grateful to @esn.tromso for covering Sara’s travel costs and for making this workshop possible.

The Urchin Density Challenge takes citizen science to the next level, inviting people around the world to document biodiversity changes in areas where volunteers are restoring kelp forests.

🤿 At each KELP event, one of our snorkelers takes around thirty photos of a 50×50 cm frame placed randomly on the seabed, both inside and outside the restoration area. These images help us track changes in sea urchin density and biodiversity over time. And this is where you come in! All you need to do is count the sea urchins you can spot inside the frame.

The first step is to download the Rissa’s mobile app from Google Play or the Apple Store. Open the app, select the Urchin Density Challenge, and start counting urchins!

The first round in Øksfjord has come to an end, and it is a great success despite the storm that hit us for two days.

We removed almost all the sea urchins that were along the jetty, and we started restoring the large rock that is adjacent to the jetty.

We gave two presentations at the local school, including screenings of @ismaeletortella’s documentary «STONE BITER».
We welcomed three classes on the restoration site, to show them what lives in the sea nearby, using an underwater drone (lent by a generous supporter) and doing some basic citizen science (measuring and weighing urchins).

🦉 Today a group of volunteers joined an off-track hike to control the owl nestboxes in Tromsdalen.

This effort is part of a large-scale program that started in 1978, and is led by Karl-Birger Strann and Vigdis Frivoll. @rissa_citizen_science is contributing with nestboxes near Tromsø.

🥾 In just 10 years, the number of visitors in Ånderdalen National Park has increased tenfold, from 2,000 to nearly 20,000. The soil and vegetation can’t cope with that kind of pressure. The trail to Åndervatnet is eroded in dry sections or turned into large mud zones in wet areas.

🚫 The damaged trail was closed for restoration this summer. But in the worst sections, the damages are so important that they need some interventions to stop erosion by water and trampling.

✅ A new trail was created parallel to the closed one, in dryer areas above.

⛏️ That is what these days were about : helping nature to heal, using various techniques and materials.

@miljodirektoratet supports these restoration efforts to fix the issues due to over tourism in Ånderdalen National Park.

This bunker from World War 2 is being converted by @lawrencemalstaf with support from @tromsokommune into a community space to look at the city and its surrounding nature, from the sky above to the sea below.

💩 The proliferation of cairns in highly visited areas like Fløya is a disaster for plants, which use rocks as shelters to survive the Arctic weather conditions.

Only cairns along hiking trails have a function: they help hikers stay on the right track when the visibility is low.

Leaving no trace starts by not building cairns, not littering, not carving messages on stones and trees, not making campfires directly on the ground.

🙏 this event was organized in collaboration with @esn.tromso the Erasmus Students Network in Tromsø.

Yesterday (23/8/25) was only the third time volunteers removed sea urchins, but the effort starts to be visible as urchins don’t return massively to the restored area.

So far, we removed 15579 urchins.
The green sea urchin is a fascinating species, and it plays an important role in a healthy ecosystem. But overfishing is the leading cause responsible for the urchin’s overpopulation, and the wide-spread urchin barrens.
Lowering the density of urchins is only one step towards long-term restoration of kelp forests in Norway. Fish diversity and abundance need to be restored too.

⚠️ Bird flu has recently been detected in Tromsø, and since we are still raising kittiwake chicks, we are taking this news very seriously.

🧪 We have received test kits from the veterinærinstitutt. We tested Dora and Loaf —our two last rescued chicks— and we sent the samples today to the lab.

We are releasing Loaf tomorrow (Saturday 16/08) morning, but Dora needs another week at least before fledging. We will test her regularly until then.

Charlie has been with us since the 20th of July. He was found by @matthewtravelsnaps in Tromsø city center. Charlie was too young to fly. Many people contributed to raising Charlie, with time, fish and money donations, and encouragements.

Special thanks to Flora, who took Charlie for a week when we were in the field in Ånderdalen National Park. Charlie had a strong and unique personality. He was very talkative when exercising. He flapped his wings like no others, which gave him strong muscles that served him during his first flight.

We feed chicks at least 5 times a day, we sit with them (especially Julian), get to know their habits, their fears, we grow very attached to them. It is both a happy and a sad moment when they leave. If they survive their first year, they will become sexually mature after 4 or 5 years. They are late breeders, long-living birds.

🔥Campfires are part of the marketing narrative associated with the Northern Lights watching tourism industry.

🌿 But it is possible to make a fire without impacting the soil and the vegetation. This project aims at spreading practices inspired by the leave-no-trace concept.

The goal is to make tourism practices in Tromsø more sustainable and reduce conflicts between the fast-growing tourism industry and local communities that perceive tourists and tour operators as being too disruptive.

Exemples of good practices:
✅ Chop your wood in small pieces to create flames and not amber and coal
✅ Don’t take wood or bark in the wild
✅ even if it is or looks dead
✅ Collect all remains at the end.

🤝 @ninaforskning is leading this research project, in collaboration with @rissa_citizen_science. @leavenotraceorg is a valuable partner in the project. Funded by the Regional Forskningsfond/RFF.

Finding these chicks before they get attacked by predators is the best way to reduce chick mortality.

👉 Learn to identify kittiwake chicks (they are not brown like the other seagull chicks)
👉 Keep your eyes open when outside
👉 Contact us immediately if you find a chick
