Today at Sørsjetéen, volunteers sampled sea urchins to measure their mass and diameter. While enjoying waffles and having a good time together 🧇

@pixiepencil inaugurated the first lightning talk, and shared some personal stories about a male wolffish found at 400 m below the surface, and looking after his eggs. It was super interesting and fun to learn about a fish those restoring kelp forests hear so much about. Thank you Jane!

Many thanks to @roelm22 who sampled the sea urchins, to Kane, Thora, Sofia who did all the measurements and to Carina who entered all the values with care.

❤️ A generous supporter is letting us use his underwater drone to allow the volunteers who are not diving to admire the marine life thriving along the jetty: anemones, sponges, soft corals 🪸

As part of making tourism more REGENERATIVE in Tromsø, travelers who are exploring Norway onboard @vikingcruises contributed today to the Tromsø Tits research project @tromso_tits.

💡The project aims at better understanding the effect of light pollution in the Arctic on birds. It is led by Dr Tomotani at the Arctic University of Norway @uitnorgesarktiske.

⚠️ Overtourism is a serious problem in Tromsø, with negative impacts on the environment and local communities. It is an extractive industry, which converts nature, a resource that is free and available to all, into financial profits for a few, in ways that are not sustainable.

Regenerative tourism, on the other hand, creates the conditions where travelers are not viewed as consumers of commercial products, but can contribute during their visit to making the destination a better place for nature and the local population.

It’s a win-win system, where travelers experience a destination in ways that are rewarding, fun, and without the guilt that often comes with mass tourism.

🐣 Today, travelers explored an incredibly beautiful forest, in a small group, while being part of a meaningful research project. A hike with a purpose.

A kelp forest is thriving in Tromsø along Sørsjetéen, but only thanks to the volunteers who dive and remove sea urchins regularly.

This small-scale success story brings hope, but it also shows that on the long-term, the ocean needs better protection, and more fish diversity and abundance to keep the sea urchin population under control.

The super abundance of urchins is a consequence of overfishing their natural predators since the 1970s.

✊ Together, we kept an eye on the endangered kittiwake, mapped biodiversity where it is threatened, dived to restore kelp forests, fixed soil erosion in Ånderdalen National Park, hiked with snowshoes for a research project on light pollution, mapped cairns and hiking trails, surveyed campfires in areas affected by overtourism, put up nest boxes for owls and songbirds and ate lots of waffles too!

🤝 @rissa_citizen_science is partnering with Dr Tomotani, making it possible for everyone to take part in her research in the field. This is Rissa’s SONGBIRDS project.

We organize events all year round to check the nestboxes, put up new ones, fill the feeding stations, and raise awareness about light pollution in the Arctic. We are currently building and painting nestboxes, from recycled wood, with volunteers as social events.

The @tromso_tits project is led by Dr. Tomotani, chronobiologist at The Arctic University of Norway @uitnorgesarktiske. One thing the researchers are looking at is the effect of artificial light on songbirds, and in particular on great tits.

@rissa_citizen_science is collaborating with Dr. Tomotani, leading citizen science activities, where participants learn about the project, and contribute to the research project in the field.

We welcome and lead volunteers all year round to control the nestboxes, build and put up new ones, fill feeding stations, and other tasks useful to the research project.

The Urchin Density Challenge takes citizen science to the next level, inviting people around the world to document biodiversity changes in areas where volunteers are restoring kelp forests.

🤿 At each KELP event, one of our snorkelers takes around thirty photos of a 50×50 cm frame placed randomly on the seabed, both inside and outside the restoration area. These images help us track changes in sea urchin density and biodiversity over time. And this is where you come in! All you need to do is count the sea urchins you can spot inside the frame.

The first step is to download the Rissa’s mobile app from Google Play or the Apple Store. Open the app, select the Urchin Density Challenge, and start counting urchins!

The first round in Øksfjord has come to an end, and it is a great success despite the storm that hit us for two days.

We removed almost all the sea urchins that were along the jetty, and we started restoring the large rock that is adjacent to the jetty.

We gave two presentations at the local school, including screenings of @ismaeletortella’s documentary «STONE BITER».
We welcomed three classes on the restoration site, to show them what lives in the sea nearby, using an underwater drone (lent by a generous supporter) and doing some basic citizen science (measuring and weighing urchins).

This effort is part of a large-scale program that started in 1978, and is led by Karl-Birger Strann and Vigdis Frivoll. @rissa_citizen_science is contributing with nestboxes near Tromsø.

Out of the 500 + owl nest boxes out in Tromsdalen County, only two were used by owls this year. And the chicks didn’t survive. Last year was a low in the rodent cycle, and more voles, and owls, are expected next year.

🥾 In just 10 years, the number of visitors in Ånderdalen National Park has increased tenfold, from 2,000 to nearly 20,000. The soil and vegetation can’t cope with that kind of pressure. The trail to Åndervatnet is eroded in dry sections or turned into large mud zones in wet areas.

🚫 The damaged trail was closed for restoration this summer. But in the worst sections, the damages are so important that they need some interventions to stop erosion by water and trampling.

✅ A new trail was created parallel to the closed one, in dryer areas above.

⛏️ That is what these days were about : helping nature to heal, using various techniques and materials.

@miljodirektoratet supports these restoration efforts to fix the issues due to over tourism in Ånderdalen National Park.

🤿 This is the 6th time volunteers join forces to restore kelp forests in Telegrafbukta.

Photos 2 and 3 show the parts we haven’t restored yet. But look at photo 4, which shows the area we started restoring in May. Seaweed is growing back, sooner than expected!

@rissa_citizen_science’s effort to restore kelp forests in Tromsø are part of the Ocean Green project, a consortium led by Ava Ocean. @nibio_no is leading the work package in which @rissa_citizen_science is directly involved through kelp restoration, public engagement and outreach.

The other partners are @nivaforskning @akvaplanniva, Across Nature and Hofseth Biocare.

This bunker from World War 2 is being converted by @lawrencemalstaf with support from @tromsokommune into a community space to look at the city and its surrounding nature, from the sky above to the sea below.

🤿 @rissa_citizen_science and the “Kelpers” brought kelp back along the southern side of this jetty called Sørsjetéen, by lowering the density of sea urchins. We left the northern side as it was, for educational purposes.

🔥 Due to the explosion of Northern Lights tourism in Tromsø, the number of campfires has increased dramatically, fueling its negative reputation among local communities.

@rissa_citizen_science partners with @ninaforskning on a project that aims to promote traceless practices, with a focus on campfires.

🔥 Campfires are often expected by travelers, as they are advertised as part of the usual package. When these fires are made directly to n the ground, the leave a long-lasting scars in the landscape, cause habitat loss and fuel local hostility towards aurora guides and tourists.

🌲 There are alternatives, for example using portable fire bowls and leaving no trace.

🤝 @rissa_citizen_science organizes outings with volunteers to raise awareness of the negative impact of campfires in nature. Together, using methods codesigned with @ninaforskning we map and remove campfires. The organization @leavenotraceorg is a partner in the project.

🔥 Today we mapped and removed campfires on a Northern Lights watching spot with volunteers.

🔥 Due to the explosion of Northern Lights tourism in Tromsø, the number of campfires has increased dramatically, fueling its negative reputation among local communities.

@rissa_citizen_science partners with @ninaforskning on a project that aims to promote traceless practices, with a focus on campfires.

🔥 Campfires are often expected by travelers, as they are advertised as part of the usual package. When these fires are made directly to n the ground, the leave a long-lasting scars in the landscape, cause habitat loss and fuel local hostility towards aurora guides and tourists.

🌲 There are alternatives, for example using portable fire bowls and leaving no trace.

🤝 @rissa_citizen_science organizes outings with volunteers to raise awareness of the negative impact of campfires in nature. Together, using methods codesigned with @ninaforskning we map and remove campfires. The organization @leavenotraceorg is a partner in the project.

Today, volunteers from @norwegiantravel and @visittromso joined the outing.

This initiative is a first in Tromsø, and aimed to foster empathy for this endangered species, and promote coexistence.

🤿 The Kelpers are making progress in Telegrafbukta.

Yesterday (23/8/25) was only the third time volunteers removed sea urchins, but the effort starts to be visible as urchins don’t return massively to the restored area.

So far, we removed 15579 urchins.
The green sea urchin is a fascinating species, and it plays an important role in a healthy ecosystem. But overfishing is the leading cause responsible for the urchin’s overpopulation, and the wide-spread urchin barrens.
Lowering the density of urchins is only one step towards long-term restoration of kelp forests in Norway. Fish diversity and abundance need to be restored too.

🤝 This project is made possible thanks to the Ocean Green project, led by Ava Ocean, under Work Package 7 led by @nibio_no. @uitnorgesarktiske is a close partner as well.

🤿 @sut_dykk plays an important role too, as many of their members join Rissa’s events, and rent out equipment from the club.

⚠️ Bird flu has recently been detected in Tromsø, and since we are still raising kittiwake chicks, we are taking this news very seriously.

🧪 We have received test kits from the veterinærinstitutt. We tested Dora and Loaf —our two last rescued chicks— and we sent the samples today to the lab.

We are releasing Loaf tomorrow (Saturday 16/08) morning, but Dora needs another week at least before fledging. We will test her regularly until then.
