🤿 Volunteers have been restoring kelp forests in Tromsø city center since 2023, lowering the density of urchins and documenting the change.

The Kelpers meet twice a month, either at Sørsjetéen (the video) or Telegrafbukta (also on Tromsø island, on the southern tip).

Some free dive, some scuba dive, other contribute from land. All play an important role in bringing these ecosystems back in the sea.

Kelp forests are a hotspot for biodiversity, and at this time of year, countless young fish find food and shelter in them.

It is also the time of year when kelp start fraying and the overall biomass naturally goes down. As the forest gets thinner, anemones, sponges, corals become more visible.

In October 2025, together with volunteers and locals, and in collaboration with Lopphavet Marine Protected Area and @arctic_lux , we began restoring a kelp forest in Øksfjord. The second and final phase of the project took place in spring 2026.

This last day in Storslett with @reisavillakssenter was a blast!

The event was free and open to all, particularly suited for families. @reisavillakssenter provided the diving suits, and eight local kids and teenagers joined, with their parents, learned about kelp forests, and sea urchins, starting with an informal talk at @haltinordtroms and then a dive around Klubbneset.

🥾 It also reminded us how much Fløya is damaged by the wear and tear caused by all the feet and tires beating the fragile Arctic tundra and soil.

In Norway, the Right To Roam, or Allemansretten, is a valued heritage. But with the explosion of tourism and of the growing resident population, paired with with an increase use of nature, and easier accessibility, nature is the one taking the hit.

❓How can we protect nature while keeping it accessible to everyone?
❓ Should there be marked trails on Fløya and similar places?
Without appropriate measures, it is nature as a heritage too that is being sacrificed.

🤝 The Fløya project is a collaboration between @rissa_citizen_science and @uitnorgesarktiske, with the participation of @ninaforskning. @tromsokommune supports the initiative, while @fjellheisentromso facilitates the logistics. @roelm22 is leading the project for @rissa_citizen_science

🐣 Boba is the first chick we rescued this year. As often, Julian was the one who found the chick in distress.

Julian noticed that this young chick was being endlessly attacked by its sibling, in the nest. It is severely wounded on the back and behind the neck. The parents were covered in Boba’s blood.

Julian is monitoring the kittiwake nests in Skattøra, Tromsø, every day. He noticed what was happening in the nest, and later found the chick on the ground, almost dead.

Several Kittiwalkers, like Julian, monitor the kittiwake nests in Tromsø from March to September, and rescue the chicks that fall off the nests in July and August.

This regenerative tourism initiative aims to create positive impact on nature, in ways that are concrete and measurable (the conversion of urchin barrens into biodiversity-rich marine habitats).

This initiative will be used to raise awareness of the consequences of overfishing on marine ecosystems.

The latest kelp event was last Sunday 5 July, and sugar kelp was looking amazing. Lots of fish using the forest as a nursery and shelter. Very little filamentous algae there.

🤝 Rissa Citizen Science efforts to restore kelp forests with volunteers is supported in part by the Ocean Green project, led by Ava Ocean, with science partners NIBIO (Norwegian institute for bioeconomy), NIVA (Norwegian institute for water research) and Akvaplan-niva. Sørsjetéen is a 200 meter-long jetty in Tromsø city center. Volunteers led by @rissa_citizen_science have been restoring a kelp forest since 2023.

Now marine life flourishes on the southern side, where volunteers keep the urchin density low.
We left the northern side as it was,so that people walking on the jetty can see the difference between the urchin barren and a lush underwater forest.

Everyone is welcome to join the free events. They are advertised on the EVENTS page of Rissa’s website (link in bio). Participants can contribute from land or in the sea.

🥾🥾 Fløya: exploring the limits of the Right to Roam

Allemannsretten, or the Right to Roam, is the traditional Norwegian principle that gives everyone the freedom to access and enjoy nature, regardless of land ownership. On Fløya, and increasingly in other parts of Norway, growing pressure from both visitors and residents is testing the limits of this principle.

🦦 Restoring kelp forests together: a community impact report.

Between April 2024 and May 2026, Rissa Citizen Science organized 23 kelp forest restoration events across three sites, engaging nearly 500 volunteers. These “Kelpers” have contributed both on land and in the sea, carrying out simple citizen science activities and reducing urchin densities to create conditions for seaweeds and kelp to recover. Time to reflect on this journey and share some of the results!

Despite the kittiwake’s alarming conservation status in Norway, the destruction of nests has continued this year in Tromsø. Since the previous breeding season, out of the 178 kittiwake nests mapped in 2025 by the Kittiwalkers in Tromsø city center, 93 have been destroyed or made inaccessible (52% loss).

At the same time, new kittiwake hotels have been deployed across the city to support this endangered species. The question remains whether these efforts can offset the ongoing push to keep kittiwakes away from buildings.

In spring 2026, the restoration site was already covered with a thick layer of seaweed.

Overfishing has been the main cause for the disappearance of kelp forests in Northern Norway since the 1970s. Without enough predators, sea urchins become super abundant and overgraze their own habitat. The ocean needs more fish and more fishes.

Adopt a kittiwake & support the conservation of this endangered species in Tromsø!

Until now, only people in Tromsø could take an active role in protecting the endangered kittiwake. From now on, anyone, anywhere in the world, can support this community effort by adopting a kittiwake nest or a rescued chick.

The black-legged kittiwake is a species of seabird, and it is endangered (EN) on Norway’s Red List.

In 2014, scientists warned that Norwegian kittiwake colonies could disappear sometime between 2024 and 2062 (Sandvik et al. 2014). The situation has not improved since 2014, and the kittiwake is more threatened than ever.

Some of the surviving kittiwakes find refuge in cities, like in Tromsø. But coexistence is not easy…
