Dykk etter bly: pick lures from the sea floor

Goal: Advocate for the use of lead-free fishing lures around Tromsø.

What you’ll do:

Pick lost lures and fishing gear around Tromsø, and drop them at the collection station in the city center.

When:

One year (01/10/2026-30/09/2027)

Where:

Tromsø and surroundings

What the project is about:

Lead weights and fishing lures are regularly lost at popular fishing spots around Tromsø, where they accumulate on the seafloor over time. Previous dives at Hella (a popular fishing spot near Tromsø) have revealed significant amounts of lost fishing gear caught among rocks and sensitive seabed habitats. During one quick dive, three people spent around 20 minutes searching the area and recovered approximately 10 kg of lead. Rissa Citizen Science and SUT (Studentenes Undervannsklubb Tromsø) are leading this one-year project to organize recreational fishing gear recovery, raise public awareness of the issue, and transform the collected material into an artwork. HOW TO PARTICIPATE - Join a Rissa CS/SUT event, or plan your own dive, collect lures and other fishing gear in a safely manner. - Fill the online form (link coming up!) with your name and contact information (or don't if you prefer to remain anonymous), the location, number of active participants and time in the sea while collecting. - Drop your harvest in the collection station in Tromsø city center... and stay tuned, we will contact you! WHAT NEXT? We are emptying the collection box regularly, to weigh and categorize the collected items. Every month, the greater contributor will receive a prize (we are working on this!) After one year, the collected items will be turned into an art piece by a Tromsø-based artist, and it will be exhibited in a public space. Various actions will be taken to advocate for the use of lead-free fishing lures around Tromsø. Everyone is welcome to join the effort: reach out if you are interested!

The project's ambassadors

Borghild Viem & Fredric Ihrsen

Borghild and Fredric have been a great source of inspiration to us through their long-standing commitment to protecting and sharing (with Nord&Ne) the beauty of the Saltstraumen marine protected area

Recreational fishing is intense in there, and fishing gear is constantly being lost in the sea. Since 2008, Borghild and Fredric have been removing marine litter, building valuable hands-on experience along the way.

We are deeply honored to have these two dedicated ocean advocates, and highly-experienced divers, as ambassadors for the Dykk Etter Bly project.

The partners

Naturverforbundet Tromsø will contribute by organizing outreach events, with guest speakers, screenings and debates.

We are looking for other partners:

  • Local dive clubs

  • Local shops in Tromsø willing to a give away the monthly prizes

  • Recreational fishing gear retailer willing to promote lead-free lures

  • Artists and art schools interested in producing an art piece from the collected gear

  • Sponsors, so we can offer transport to the volunteers during the events and cover the project's expenses

They are offering prizes
